When anyone faces dreaded diseases like cancer, you are likely to face depression and pressure. At this juncture when you are close to your festive like Christmas and New Year Eve, instead of getting indulged into depression about the cancer, it’s time to stop worrying and start living. As per Cancer Society of America, it is inevitable to see the patients of cancer to indulge into issues like depression and this feeling goes up when one the patient has the festive time around. It may be difficult for anyone to get rid of these feelings and start living, however, on the positive note, the patients should motivate them to keep the feelings of sadness at bay. If people around the patient feel that the person with cancer is into depression then it’s high time to get rid of act on a right path and help them to get away from such feeling.

What is Depression?


Depression is a feeling of sadness among patients of cancer when they find things difficult to cope up. You can therefore find emotions like anger, sadness, frustration and grief while encountering the feeling of depression. And when these feeling remains for long term the cancer patient is likely to slip into depression. This is generally known as clinical depression, which is actually a serious kind of illness that has to be addressed since it can lead to other complications for the treatment of cancer. Clinical depression can occur in one patient out of four facing the menace of cancer, however, it can be easily treated.

  • Sad or empty kind of mood all day and night in patients
  • No interest in fun or other activities that patients used to once enjoy
  • Eating problems like Loss of appetite or overeating giving weight loss or gain
  • A number of changes in your sleep pattern
  • Fatigue or less amount of energy all day
  • People around you find you restless all the time both at day and night
  • Guilt feelings like worthlessness and helplessness
  • Trouble in focussing or remembering and things like decisions making
  • Death thoughts or suicidal tendencies that compel people to take steps for suicide
  • Huge mood swings during the time of depression to periods of agitation and high amount of energy

Once the cancer patients face issues like depression, you need to talk to the family members about these tendencies. There is no harm feeling angry, sad or frustrated when one lives with cancer especially when festive time is around. The family member should listen to the patient carefully; decide on a couple of things what you can do to support each other. And lastly motivate the patient rather than forcing things on them. The patient can get necessary counselling from certain support groups active in this field. The patient can think of using the tools like meditation and other kinds of spiritual support. Try exercises like deep breathing and relaxation exercises and other things.  Make sure the patient doesn’t take resort in alcohol. Take help from the cancer support team to help the patient to go smooth.


The cancer patients can have tough time while coping up with their cancer disease. It is obvious to see them getting indulged into depression. However, the patient should not lose hope when it comes to survival with the menace of cancer.
